Marbury vs. Madison
First US supreme court to declare a federal law-the Judiciary act of 1801-unconstitutional; John Adams's "midnight appointment" of Federalist judges prompted the suite

Barbary Pirates
Pirates off the Mediterranean coast of Africa; President Thomas Jefferson refusal to pay them tribute to protect American ships sparked an undeclared naval war with North African nations
Corps of Discovery
Lewis and Clark led this group of men on an expedition of the newly purchased Louisiana territory. Missouri-Oregon. Kept detailed journals and drew maps of previously unexplored territory. Gave US a claim to the Oregon country by right of discovery and exploration
Aaron Burr
Thomas Jefferson's vice president, lost favor with Jefferson supporters who were republicans. Sought to work with Federalists and run as their candidate for governor of NY. Hamilton opposed Burr's candidacy. Ended up dueling and Hamilton was killed.
Impressment
The British navy used press-gangs to kidnap men in British and colonial ports who were then forced to serve in the British navy
Tecumesh
Leader of the Shawnee tribe who tried to unite all indians into a confederation that could defend their hunting grounds. Seemed dangerous to American govt and they waged war on him and his tribe. Was killed at the battle of the Thames.
War Hawks
In 1811, confessional members from the Southern and Western districts who clamored for a war to seize Canada and Florida were dubbed "war hawks"
Andrew Jackson
-Major general in Tennessee militia
-Defeated Creek Indians, invaded panhandle of Spanish Florida, won battle of New Orleans
-As president vetoed bulls for federal funding of internal improvements and re-chartering of the second national bank
-Wanted to pass a "force bill" that would authorize him to use the army to compel the state to comply with the tariffs
-Forced eastern Indians to move West of Mississippi river so their lands could be used by white settlers
-Groups who opposed Jackson came together to form a political party called the Whigs
Francis Scott Key
During war of 1812 watch British forces bombard Fort McHenry, but fail to take it. Seeing the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn inspired him to write the star spangled banner
Treaty of Ghent
The signing of this treaty ended the war of 1812 without solving any of the disputes between Britain and the US.
Hartford Convention
Meeting of New England Federalists on December 15th 1814 to protest the war of 1812
