Anaconda Plan
blockade every southern port (Baltimore, Charleston, St. Louis, Savannah, New Orleans) to prevent them from importing & exporting (no cotton)

Battle of Vicksburg
1863 - Grant laid seize on a fort @ Vicksburg which lasted a year. People ate all horses, dogs, cats, rats, and eventually other people.
Union gained control of entire MS rv by the end.
Battle of Bull Run
1861 - Union suspected easy victory.
Stonewall Jackson defeated the Union and the army ran back to WDC

*if Jackson would have followed them, he could have captured Lincoln and the war would have been over
Battle of Antietam
1862 - large number of casualties
Should have been a union victory because McClellan found Lee's battle plans before the battle.
McClellan didn't want to fight much in fear of losing troops
Resulted in a draw
Emancipation Proclamation
1863 - The Battle of Antietam provided Lincoln the opportunity to free slaves.

Slaves in confed were free but not the slaves in border states (for fear of more secession)

important symbolic effort because it energized blacks in the north to join the 54th MA Regiment

1862 - Confederate win
Union did terribly - ran up a hill and got shot down
Union was lead by Burnside (he was fired)
Battle of Chancellorsville
1863 - lead by Thomas Hooker
once again defeated by Lee
Gettysburg
1863 - Lee decided to go on the offense to try to force the Union to the negotiation table
He invaded PA at Harrisburg
The Union army intercepted him @ Gettysburg and won
Lee was uncomfortable on the offense and Stonewall Jackson was shot
Happened at the same time Grant captured Vicksburg; beginning of the end for the Confed
March to the Sea
William Sherman lead a march down to Savannah from TN. Army destroyed everything in it's path down, captured Savannah and sealed the victory
