Clarification |
90% of all amber is treated to the improve its clarity this is done buy heating in rape seed oil. Untreated amber with tiny bubbles that can be so small that they cannot be resolved under a microscope is called bastard amber. The appearance of sun spagles is a side effect. Amber also may be clarified by heating under pressure with nitrogen and then baking in an oven |
|
Dyeing |
Typically red or green |
|
Burning |
The backs of cabochons may be burnt to make the amber look green or almost black. If this burnt area is partly polished away the amber can look red. |
|
Coatings |
Epoxy resins may be used. Often worn or peeled areas can be seen under a microscope. |
