Constructive boundary
Two plates that move apart from each other

Two plates that move towards each other
Conservative boundary
The plates move horizontally past each other, without creating or destroying the earths crust
Subduction zone
When the oceanic plate sinks underneath the continental plate
Composite volcano
Are made up of alternating layers of lava and ash, others are made from lava only
Sheild volcano
Tend to be found at constructive plate boundaries. Low with gentle slopes, formed by basic lava which is thin and runny. Basic lava spreads quickly to form low shield shaped volcanoes. Erupt frequently and gently.
Epicentre
Is point on the earth's surface directly above the foucus.
Richter scale
a numerical scale for expressing the magnitude of an earthquake on the basis of seismograph oscillations. The more destructive earthquakes typically have magnitudes between about 5.5 and 8.9; it is a logarithmic scale and a difference of one represents an approximate thirtyfold difference in magnitude.
Mercalli scale
a twelve-point scale for expressing the local intensity of an earthquake, ranging from I (virtually imperceptible) to XII (total destruction)
