Producing Industrial alcohol?
Addition reaction between Ethene and water (as steam). (Reaction is called hydration. Requires 300 deg and 50 - 80 atmospheres pressure.) Steam and ethene pass over catalyst (sulfuric acid).
Fermentation of glucose?
Grains are soaked in water. They germinate and create enzymes which catalyse the hydrolysis of starch into glucose.
Yeast is added. Glucose passes through yeast and enzymes catlyse the fermentation of glucose to ethanol and CO2.
Hydrolysis of polysaccharide to monosaccharide?
(C6H10O5)n + nH2O --> nGlucose
Hydrolysis of disacchide to mono?
C12H22O11 + H2O --> 2Glucose
Fermentation of glucose?
Glucose --> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Conditions for ethanol by fermentation?
**20-30 deg in vessle. Vessle must be cooled as fermentation is exothermic process. OR enzymes are ineffective
**Moderately acidic conditions. OR different products
**Ferm is anerobic thus nearly no oxgen OR ethenal and vinegar. CO2 produced protects ferm from air.
**Nutrients must be provided for yeast growth
Reduction of dichromate?
Cr2O7-2 + 14H + 6e- ==> 2Cr3+ 7H2O
