NAME:
Albuterol; Ventolin; Proventil
Class:
Sympathomimetic
Action (1-3)
1)Beta2 selective adrenegic agonist 2)relaxes bronchial smooth muscle 3)minimal Beta1 stimulation, little or no Alpha stimulation
Action (4-5)
4)Stimulates the CNS
5)Onset of action is from 5 to 15 minutes.
USE:
Bronchospasm
Wheezing
Hyperkalemia
Side Effects:
CNS: anxiety, diaphoresis. dizziness, headache
Cardiovascular: Chest pain, ectopics,HTN, Hypotension(possible) palpitations, tachycardia
CONTRAindications:
Absolute:Hypersensitivity; Symptomatic tachycardias
Relative: Cardiovascular disorders
Precautions:
1)May cause severe paradoxical bronchospasm from rptd. excessive use 2)Use with caution in PT's with associated tachyarrhythmias, cardiac disease, or severe HTN
Drug Interactions:
1)Use with epi or other sympathomimetics may increase risk of toxicity
2)Beta Blockers may inhibit bronchodilation actions
Preparations:
2.5mg in 2.5 or 3ml ampules, pillows, etc.
50mg/10ml multi-dose bottle
100mcg & 90mcg MDI's
Adult Dose:
Nebulizer: 2.5-5.0mg in 3 to 6 ml NS given over 5 to 10 mins.prn
MDI: 1 to 2 inhalations;May be rptd in 15mins.
Hyperkalemia: 10-20 mg nebulized over 15min
Pediatric Dose:
Some ares give pediatric PT's the same dose as the adult
Route:
inhalation-via nebulizer with O2 source at 6-10 l/minute or MDI
