How is the LMA placed in the hypopharynx?
index finger caudally guides cuff along hard palate and down into hypopharynx until increased resistance is felt

Bite block (3 cm roll of gauze)
What is the usual cause of LMA obstruction after insertion?
downfolding of the epiglottis or transient laryngospasm
What should not be done with a LMA in while the patient is not awake?
cuff deflation, pharyngeal suction, LMA removal
How would you know if a patient with a LMA is awake?
opens mouth on command
What is the ideal position for a LMA?
bordered by the base of the tongue superiorly, the pyriform sinuses laterally, and the upper esophageal sphincter inferiorly
What are indications for LMA use?
Any patient in whom anesthesia can be safely maintained through a face mask, or airway rescue
What are contraindications to LMA use?
GERD, PPV, duration of use, position, surgical procedures, pathology of mouth, pharynx or larynx, restricted access to the airway
