Hypothesis
A precise testable statement about the expected outcome of an investigation.
Aim
A general statement about the purpose of the investigation.
Experiment
A research investigation where one specific variable is manipulated to observe its effect, if any, on another specific variable while keeping all other variables controlled. In a true experiment, participants are randomly allocated to conditions or take part in all conditions.
Variable
A measurable characteristic or value that can differ from person to person or have multiple values.
Experimental hypothesis
A hypothesis used in context of an experiment.
Alternate hypothesis
Any hypothesis that is not the null.
Directional hypothesis
More precise than a non-directional hypothesis and specifically states the direction of results. Also known as a one-tailed hypothesis.
E.g Participants who read digits out load will later recall a greater number of digits than ppts who read the digits sub-vocally. The direction of the results is clearly stated i.e more digits will be recalled in condition one
Non-directional hypothesis
Is one in which the direction of results is not predicted. Also known as a two-tailed hypothesis because the direction of the result is not specified but could go in either direction.
E.g There will be a difference in the number of digits recalled in the reading out loud condition compared to the sub-vocal condition. The psychologist has predicted that there will be a difference but has not specifies in which condition will be more or fewer digits will be recalled.
