Function of adrenal cortex
Production of steroid hormones
What are the layers of the adrenal cortex? (Outer to inner)
1. Zona Glomerulosa
2. Zona Fasciculata 3. Zona Reticularis |
Function of Zona Glomerulosa
Produces aldosterone (increases blood pressure) upon stimulation by angiotensin II
Function of Zona Fasciculata
Upon stimulation by ACTH, secretes glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisol), which are involved in carbohydrate metabolism.
(ACTH is released from basophils of the pars distalis of the pituitary gland) |
Function of Zona Reticularis
Upon stimulation by ACTH, it produces glucocordicoids (cortisol) and weak androgens (DHEA)
Function of the adrenal medulla
Contains vesicles with epinephrine and norepinephrine. The medulla is stimulated by glucocorticoids from the cortex via cortical sinusoidal capillaries.
