What does triage mean?
To sort your patients based on the severity of their injuries.
What is the goal of triage?
Doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
What are the four triage categories?
Immediate (Red)
Delayed (Yellow)
Non-Urgent / Walking wounded (Green)
Expectant / Dead or Dying (Black)
What is the first step in the START triage system?
Call out and try to identify walking wounded. Direct these patients to the treatment area or a specific rally point
What is the next stage?
Go to the nearest non ambulatory patient.
What is the first step in assessing a patient?
Assess breathing
What if the patient is not breathing?
Reposition the airway and recheck.
What if there is still no breathing?
Class the patient as dead with a back tag.
What if the patient starts to breath when the airway is opened?
Put them in the recovery position and give them a Red tag - Immediate!
If when assessed the patient was breathing what is next?
Assess the rate of breathing
What are you looking for with the rate of breathing?
Less than 10 or more than 30 tag as immediate

Between 10 and 30 move on and assess circulation.
What are you looking for with circulation?
Weak or absent radial pulse gets the patient a red immediate tag

If the radial pulse is present then move on to the next stage of the assessment
What is the last part of the assessment?
The neurologic status.
How is the neurologic status determined?
Assess the patients ability to follow simple commands. Touch your nose with your finger, squeeze my hand, show me three fingers etc.
How is the patient categorized by the following of commands?
If the patient cannot follow commands they should be tagged as immediate, if they can follow commands then they are classed as delayed.
