APPROVAL PLAN
Provide books matched to a pre-approved profile of subjects desired by the library or institution. Libraries can review books and send back what they don't want.
BLANKET ORDER PLAN
A vendor plan that does NOT provide for the return of unwanted titles by the library. The vendor supplies one copy of each title published or each title in certain subject areas, such as juvenile books, fiction, and so on.
BOOK CLUB
A subscriber service that supplies books through the mail
EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
provide a way to exchange institutional publications, as well as duplicate or unwanted materials; often at research institutions or large academic libraries
FIRM ORDER
A book ordered on a title-by-title selection basis, whether from a publisher, book dealer, or vendor. It is normally not returnable.
GATHERING PLAN
Any formal plan or agreement with a vendor to receive materials automatically.
GIFTS
Donations of materials given to the library.
GIFTS AND EXCHANGE
A department, section, or area in a library that is responsible for receiving (often unsolicited) gifts from a variety of sources and exchanging materials (usually periodicals) with other libraries both nationally and internationally.
LEASE
A contract granting use of property during a specified period in exchange for a specified rent payment. Method usually used by libraries to obtain access to electronic databases. A type of rental.
LEASE PLAN
Agreement with a vendor to rent books in high demand and either return them when demand has lessened or purchase them at nominal price.
MCNAUGHTON PLAN
Book leasing plan for libraries administered by Brodart Corporation. ICC uses this plan for their browsing collection.
NONSUBJECT PARAMETERS
Characteristics in a library’s approval plan profile that do not relate to the subject of the books. They may include characteristics such as format, academic level, price, and publisher.
ON APPROVAL
Books provided to libraries by vendors for examination in light of possible purchase. They can be returned.
PROFILE
The document that tells a vendor what materials to supply or not to supply on an approval plan or blanket order plan.
STANDING ORDER
An instruction to a vendor to regularly supply a specific title.
SUBJECT PARAMETERS
The part of the approval plan profile that specifies which subjects should be sent to the library as books, which should be provided as bibliographic notifications on forms or slips or electronically, and which should not be sent at all.
SUBSCRIPTION
A regular method of procurement for publications such as periodicals, journals, popular magazines, newspapers, abstracts, and indexes generally issued more than once a year.
TITLE-BY-TITLE SELECTION
Book or serial titles that are selected one at a time instead of being received through approval plans, bibliographic forms or slips or electronic notification, standing orders or subscriptions.
