conversion of frightening wish to safer opposite
ex) teenage daughter hate mom unconsciously but consciously experience these feelings as intense love
-people attracted to homosexuality but fear it will be consciously homophobic
Projection
person consciously experiences unconscious drive
ex) friend projects unconscious anger on friend and think its friend who has anger problem
Rationalization
use of conscious reasoning to explain away anxiety provoking thoughts/feelings
-sadistic man rationalize beatings he gives children as a fatherly duty--that its discipline
Immature defenses
distort reality the most which leads to more ineffective actions
ex) projection
Intermediate defenses (neurotic defenses)
less distortion than immature and lead to somewhat effective coping
ex) repression, reaction formation
Mature defenses
less distortion and more adaptive behavior
suppression, humor
Suppression
conscious avoidance of negative thinking; person has more conscious control over thinking of distressing experience than in repression
