Categorical Vs. Dimensional Models

Categorical: Personality disorders are ways of relating that are different from psychologically healthy behavior (In their own categories)



Dimensional- Personality disorders are extreme versions of otherwise normal personality variations

DSM's categorical Model

Advantage:


-simplicity (Either have disorder or not)


Disadvantages:


-Does not determine the degree to the disorder


-Greater likelihood of comorbidity(2 or more disorders)


-Does not make a link between Abnormal and Normal behavior


What is personality?

-A unique and long-term pattern of inner experience and outward behavior


-Tends to be consistent and is often described in terms of "traits"


-Personality is also flexible, allowing us to adapt to new environments

What is personality Disorder

-An inflexible pattern of inner experience and outward behavior


-This pattern is seen in most interpersonal interactions


-Differs from the experiences and behaviors usually expected


-continues for years


-Significant distress or impairment

-Pervasive indifference toward others


-restricted range of emotional expression


-Unaffected by praise or criticism


-Few friends


-Maintains superficial connections with relatives


-Lacks social skills


-Lack of interest in sexual experiences

C) Characteristics of Schizotypal Personality Disorder

-acutely uncomfortable around others


-Deficient in social relationships


-Reduced capacity for closeness


-Peculiar in thought, action, appearence


-Bizarre fantasies and preoccupations


-unkempt, mismatched, prefer to dress in strange clothes


-Digressive or vague in speech


-Use words differently than others


-Talk to themselves openly
