Advantages of indirect physiologic testing
simple to perform, short learning curve, short time, accurate for hemodynamically sig disease, provides objective, quantitative physiologic info, relatively inexpensive equipment
Limitations
inability to identify precise location of disease/ will not detect minor levels of diffuse atherosclerotic disease
Methods of indirect physiologic testing
Pulse Volume Recording (PVR), doppler analog waveform analysis, segmental limb pressures, abi, exercise stress test (post-reactive hyperemia)
ABI
ankle-brachial indices
Questions to ask pts
leg pain when walk, if so is it in both legs?
Which leg is worse? What part of the leg hurts? Is it progressive or prevent you from walking? How many blocks can you walk before you have to stop? Does the pain go away when you stop walking? Have you ever had a bypass graft or arterial operation, what type? |
