Canadian Shield

Location: Wrapped around Hudson Bay in a horseshoe shape.



Characteristics: Hills worn by erosion and hudres of lakes carved by glaciers.

Interior Lowlands

Location: Located west of the Applachian Mountains and east of the Great Plains.



Characteristics: Rolling flatlands with many rivers, broad river valleys, and grassy hills.

Great Plains

Location: Located west of the Interior Lowlands and east of the Rocky Mountains.



Characteristics: Flat land that gradually increases in elevation westward; grasslands.

Rocky Mountains

Location: Located west of the Great Plains and east of the Basin and Range.



Characteristics: Rugged mountains stretching from Alaska almost to Mexico; high elevation; contains the Continental Divide which determines the directional flow of rivers.

Basin And Range

Location: Located west of the Rocky Mountains and east of the Sierra Nevadas and the Cascades.



Characteristics: Area of varying elevations containing isolated mountain ranges and Death Valley, the lowest point in North America.

Coastal Range

Location: Rugged mountains along the Pacific Coast that stretch from California to Canada.



Characteristics: Contains rugged mountains and fertile valleys.
