5 types of diss. amnesia
1. Localized
events occurring in specific time period ( most common)
2. Selective
forget only disturbing info during specific time period
3. Generalized
forget entire lives (VERY RARE)
4. Continuous
forgets from a particular time in past until present (quite RARE)
5. Systematic/systematized
forgets specific category of information (VERY RARE; forget you have a job, but remember everything else)
Diss. Fugue
fugue= flight
-person travels unrepentantly away from home/familiar surrounding, assumes new identity partially or completely (confused about identity)
-appear normal without mental challenges
-cannot recall past or fills with false memories
can last hours to days(RARELY months or years)
-tends to end suddenly
-individuals regain most/all memories
-serves to protect from trauma
Amnesia, fugue, and the law
-sometimes claimed as criminal defense > only if persists through hypnosis and barbiturate interviews
- no test to prove for malingering
-consider gain produced by symptoms
-crime due to true diss. is irrational or produces no secondary gain
