What are the cognitive requirements to qualify for AAC?
There are no requirements to qualify for AAC
What is Linguistic Competence?
The receptive and expressive language skills of one's native language(s). It involves knowledge of the linguistic code unique to one's AAC system
what is Operational Competence?
The technical skills needed to operate the AAC system accurately and efficiently
What is Social Competence?
Skills of social interaction such as initiating, maintaining, developing, and terminating communication interactions
What is strategic competence?
Involves the compensatory strategies that people who rely on AAC use to deal with functional limitations associated with AAC use
What is core vocabulary?
Consists of highly functional words and phrases such as basic functional needs, brief social exchanges and necessary information
What is fringe vocabulary?
Includes words and expressions that are content-rich, topic-related. Customizes AAC system for the person and allows for diverstiy
What are four units of vocabulary?
Letters and letter settings, syllables, words, phrases and sentences
What is aided communication?
Communication aid external to the body. Can be no tech, low tech, or high tech
What are some advantages of a no tech device?
least expensive, highly personalized, no mechanical parts
What is an example of a no tech device?

What are some features of a low tech device?
It has some mechanical parts, it uses objects, pictures, letters or words, it may or may not have voice output
What are some possible features of a high tech device?
has all the features of low tech plus more; speech output (digitized and synthesized), word prediction, environmental control units, ability to interface with a computer
what is digitized speech?
Pre-recorded speech, usually by someone of the same gender and similar age
what is synthetic speech?
assembled by electronic elements of the device. adjustments can be made to pitch, loudness, and other features
What is the difference between static and dynamic display?
in a device with static display the items on the screen stay the same whereas in a device with dynamic display, the screen changes like the screen on a computer
what are three types of scanning?
-Automatic: movement is automatic once the switch is activated
-Step: moves through one step at a time
-Inverse: hold down switch to move through
What are some common scan patterns?
Linear, Row-Column, quadrant or group-item, direct scanning
