Nora's Conflict with Society
Takes out a loan - unusual for that time period. Forges her father's signature. Leaves her home at the end - rejects her husband and her children. "What do I care about society? I think it's a bore."
Nora's Conflict with Torvald's Ideals - Money Borrowing
Nora borrows money, but Torvald is against the idea of loans - "No debts! Never borrow! A home that is founded on debts and borrowing can never be a place of freedom and beauty."
Nora's Conflict with Torvald's Ideals - Torvald's Cowardice
Nora believes Torvald will take the fall for her misdeeds, as he says "I will bear the burden for both of us." However, he is more concerned about how he would appear to the rest of society as a criminal, showing his selfishness and his cowardice.
Nora's Conflict with Torvald's Ideals - Value of Money
Nora spends frivolously (clothes, macaroons, tips for porter, presents for children), but Torvald is hesitant to spend as much in this regard. Conflict is shown as Torvald calls Nora a 'squanderbird'.
Nora's Conflict with Torvald's Ideals - Deceit
Torvald hates the idea of lying and the telling of untruths/falsehoods, shown when he says that lies 'poison a home'. Nora conflicts with this as she tells lies and misleads on multiple occasions (macaroons, working to pay off debt, flirting with Dr Rank).
Hidden Conflict
Nora pretends she is making flowers for the Christmas tree to hide the fact that she works as a copier to pay off her debt. She hides the fact that she is actually smart by playing up to Torvald's pet names and condescending. This is shown when she says "You have no idea how many expenses we larks and squirrels have."
Torvald's Obsession with Appearances
Tells Mrs Linde she should embroider instead of knitting, as it is an 'ugly business'. Nora wants Torvald to keep Krogstad's job, but Torvald refuses to assert his dominance in the business - "What would people think of me?". Hates the idea of Krogstad using his first name and not Helmer. Mrs Linde has to enter a separate room to mend dress. Opens letter and tells Nora that they shall appear to remain together.
Truth
Krogstad tells truth in letter 1. Mrs Linde confesses that she only wrote her letter so that she could get money, and that she still had feelings for him. Dr Rank tells the truth of his love for Nora.
Masquerade
Torvald creates persona for Nora in which she is his mistress.
Masquerade - Nora playing up to Torvald
Nora's 'silly woman' façade to play up to Torvald - "I'm not completely useless, am I?"
Masquerade - Nora and Dr Rank
Nora pretends she has feelings for Rank when she flirts with him, but in reality she does not. Her flirting is shown when she shows him her flesh-coloured leggings and tells him he can 'look higher if you want'.
Masquerade - Torvald's self-pretence
Torvald pretends to himself that he'll be man enough to save his wife, but he cares more about his own appearance.
Masquerade - Dr Rank's Disease
Dr Rank conceals the extents of his illness from Torvald as Torvald dislikes ill people due to his infatuation with appearances/perfection.
