What does DC stand for? |
Direct current |
What is a direct current? |
The electricity moves in one constant direction/ possesses a constant polarity It is the electricity made by a battery or by rubbing certain types of materials together. |
Where in the studio is this used? |
Phantom power for microphones Batteries |
What is single phase |
Current generally used in houses for simple and less-loaded devices Capacity is 230 volts Requires three power cables (live, neutral and earth) |
What is three phase? |
Generates 1.73 times more current than single phase. Has 3 live wires, 1 neutral |
Where is three phase used? |
Used in electrical grids to transfer power (think power pylons) Also used to power large motors, lifts and professional studio lighting. Broken down into three phases which are used seperately. |
Why is three phase useful? |
It is more powerful You can always draw power from at least one phase |
What does AC stand for? |
Alternating current |
What does alternating current do? |
Runs electricity in one direction around the circuit and then moves it the other direction around the circuit. The voltage varies as it moves back and forth |
What is the device called that changes AC current into DC? |
A rectifier/Diode |
How does a rectifier work? |
It allows the current to flow through one way, but stops it from going backwards. Meaning the current can only flow in one direction |
What is a capacitor? |
Store power electrostatically in an electric field. For example, a power supply would store electric inside it when it charges. |
How can a capacitor help with a rectifier? |
It can provide power while the rectifier voltage falls. |
