Conditioning

teaching to make choices without an awareness of why

Classical Conditioning

a learning procedure in which associations are made between a natural stimulus and a neutral stimulus

Learning

relatively permanent change in a behavioral tendency that results from an experience

Neutral Stimulus

a stimulus that has nothing to do with the prior stimulus and does not elicit a response (Tuning Fork)

Unconditioned Stimulus

Unconditioned Stimulus – an event that leads to a certain predictable response usually without previous training (Food)

Unconditioned Response

a reaction that occurs naturally when the unconditioned stimulus is presented (Salivation at food) (Reflex)

Conditioned Stimulus

a once-neutral event that elicits a given response after a period of training in which it has been paired with an unconditioned stimulus

Conditioned response

learned reaction to a conditioned stimulus

Generalization

Responding similarly to similar stimuli (Responding the same way to a circle and an oval)

Discrimination

the ability to respond differently to similar but distinct stimuli (responding differently to circle and an oval)

Extinction

the gradual disappearance of a conditioned response when the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus (No longer salivate at Tuning fork)

Spontaneous Recovery

regain the conditioned response after a rest period from extinction
