A nickname for a Nothern who went South during reconstruction in the hope of getting rich.
Sharecropper
a farmer that worked on land owned by another person- many freed slaves in the south after the Civil War became sharecroppers.
Transcontinental Railroad
A railroad the stretches across a continent- the first US transcontinental Railroad was built in 1863 by the Union Pacific & Central Pacific Railroad.
Homestead Act
A law passed in 1862 to encourage people to settle in the West by giving a farmer 160 acres of free land.

Spoil System
Practice or rewarding supporters with government jobs- this practice led to corruption 7 later Congress established the Civil Service commision in 1833 to end this corruption.

reporters and journalists who reported on corrupt politicans and othr problems im=n society, for example, Uptojn Sinclair wrote The Jungle about the gruesomedetails of the meat oacking industry- Thomas Nast's cartoons ruined Boss Tweed.
