What are Tides

Tides are the rising and falling of ocean waters caused mainly by gravitational pull of the moon, with some help from the sun.
Tide Facts
1) It takes just over 6 hours for an area to go from high to low tide
2) The difference between high and low tide varies from place to place
Where do high and low tides occur?
High tides occur directly across from the moon at the area closest to the moon as well as the area furthest from the moon. Low tides occur on the other 2 sides of the earth, not directly across from the moon.
Spring Tides
1) tides that occur at new & full moon
2) sun, earth, & moon are aligned
3) sun's gravity assists moon's gravity
4) causes more extreme tides (high tide is higher than normal, low tide is lower than normal)
Neap Tides
1) occur at waxing & waning quarter moons
2) sun, earth, and moon form a right angle
3) sun's gravity works against the moon's gravity
4) causes less extreme tides (high tide is lower than normal, low tide is higher than normal).
