What is endochondral ossification?
Cartilaginous model of bone which is first made by chondrocytes (laminal bone)
What locations have endochondral ossification?
Axial and appendicular skeleton
What is membranous ossification?
Woven bone formed directly w/out cartilage
What locations have membranous ossification?
Bones of Calvarium and facial bones
What do osteoblasts do?
Build bone by secreting collagen and catalyzing mineralization
What do osteoclasts do?
Multinucleated cells that disolve bone by secreting acid and collagenases
Differentiate from monocytes/macrophages |
What does PTH do in regards to bone?
At low intermittent levels it exerts anabolic levels, exerts anabolic effect (builds bone) on osteoblasts and osteoclasts
Chronic high PTH levels cause catabolic effects (breaks bone) |
What does estrogen do in regards to bone?
Estrogen inhibits apoptosis in bone-forming osteoblasts and induces apoptosis in bone-resorbing osteoclasts
What does low estrogen do to bone?
Cause apoptosis to osteoblasts and doesn't induce apoptosis to osteoclasts, leading to bone loss and osteoporosis
