Primary Source
An original record of an event. Includes eyewitness accounts, diary entries, speeches, quotes, letters, etc.
Secondary Source
Anything that is not written by an eyewitness to an event. Examples include biographies and textbooks.
Geography
The study of the Earth's environment and resources.
Latitude
Measures distance north or south of the equator.
Longitude
Measures distance east or west of the equator. The 0 degree line is known as the Prime Meridian.
Hemisphere
Half of the Earth. The Earth can be divided into 4 hemispheres (Northern, Southern, Eastern or Western.)
Climate
Weather patterns over time.
Absolute location
An exact point on the globe, measured by using both longitude and latitude points.
Relative location
A place's location as determined by it's direction in relation to another place (ex. Long Island is East of New York City).
Region
Parts of the Earth with similar characteristics.
Culture
A way of life developed by a people.
Artifact
An object made by humans.
Civilization
A group of people with an advanced culture (usually distinguished by 6 particular features).
Archaeologist
A scientist who studies evidence left by early people, to learn about their culture.
Land bridge
Strip of land connecting two continents.
Polytheism
Religious belief which worships multiple gods.
Native Americans
Descendants of the first people to arrive in the Americas.
Mesoamerica
Includes Central America and Mexico.
Iroquois Confederacy
An alliance of Native American nations created to make decisions and resolve disputes.
Adaptation
The way a people change to use the resources found in their environment.
