Typ- print


Typography- the art or process of printing

Examples: happiness, determined, tired or exhausted, boredom, disappointment, faithful, playful, dapper, stressed, sadness, competitive, anger or bitter, silly or humorous, loneliness, serious or somber, questioning or confusion

Vict

Vict- conquer


Victor- the winner in a fight, battle, contest, or struggle


Convince- to cause someone to believe or feel certain


Invincible- incapable of being defeated or overcome


Evict- to put out by legal process

Analogy

Comparing two things that are usually thought to be different from each other, but have something in common; a type of relating factor.


An apple is a type of fruit as a carrot is a type of vegetable.

Imagery

Author's use of language that appeals to the five senses in order to help the reader paint a picture in their minds.


Sight- sparkling, dull, colorful, bright


Smell- buttery, rich, old, fishy


Hear- booming, popping, loud, soft


Taste- spicy, sweet, sour, salty


Touch- smooth, slimy, rough, silky

Crat

Crat- rule


Autocrat- ruler with absolute power


Aristocrat- a noble man or a noble woman


Democrats- person who believes in democracy as a principle of government

Poli

Poli- city


Metropolis- a large city


Police- an official force established and given power by a government


Megalopolis- densely populated urban area made of adjoining cities


Acropolis- strongly fortified place

Foreshadowing

The use of clues to let the reader know what may happen later.


Fore- means in front of or previous


Shadow- means hint or suggestion

Theo

Theo- of god or a god


Monotheism- the belief that there is only one god


Polytheism- belief of more than one god


Atheism- disbelief or denial of a god


Theology- the study of the nature of god

Metaphor

Compares two things that are not alike. The author wants to help us picture what they're saying. The sentence does not have like or as in it.


Ex. My mom was a real bear this morning.

Theme

The moral, lesson, or heart of the story. Rarely stated so you must infer. Not the topic.


Ex. Cinderella


Topic- she marries a prince


Theme- good things happen to good people - loves difficulty - lost dreams

Soph

Soph- wise


Sophomore- tenth grade high schooler, second year in college


Philosophy- love and pursue of wisdom


Philosopher- a specialist in philosophy


Sophisticated- having acquired worldly knowledge of refinement

Anecdote

A short story significant to the topic at hand; usually adding personal knowledge or experience to the topic.

Symbolism

When an object or word represents an abstract idea different from the literal meaning.


An action, person, place, word, or object can all have symbolic meaning.

Allusion

A reference to something from the bible, mythology, history or classic works of literature.


Ex. Prose- "His Herculean strength surprised the crowd"


Mythological reference to the legendary Hercules in Greeks myth

Point of View

The perspective from which a piece of text is written.


1st- told from the point of view of one character (I, we, me)


2nd- narrator addresses you (you, your)


3rd- limited: the thoughts and feelings of one character, omniscient: all knowing, objective: facts and events

Sign

Sign- to sign, mark, or seal


Signal- an act, event, or the like that causes or encores some act or action


Signature- persons' name or a mark representing it


Insignia- a badge or distinguishing mark of office or honor


Design- to plan and fashion artistically or skillfully

Tempo

Tempo- pace or time


Temporal- of or pertaining to time of the present life


Temporary- lasting for a time only


Tempo- the rate or degree of movement in time. (Pace)

Vol- will


Malevolent- wishing harm to others


Benevolent- characterized by doing good


Volition- the act or an instance of choosing or deciding


Volunteer- a person who performs and or act of his or her own will

Alliteration

When two or more nearby words have the same beginning sounds.


Examples- Stop staring and start stirring.

Omni- all or every


Omnipotent- able in every respect all-powerful, having unlimited power


Omniscient- having universal knowledge


Omniarch- a ruler of everything in the world or universe

Science- the observation, study, and theoretical explanation of natural phenomena


Conscious- the ability to perceive what is happening around oneself

Dem- people or of the people


Democracy- a government run by the people


Epidemic- a rapid spread among people


Demography- study of characteristics of human population

Flashback

A technique used by an author or writer to take a reader back in time to explain an event.
