Hernan Cortes

landed in Mexico looking for a wealthy empire. He started a war against the Aztecs in which the Aztecs were no match.

Alonso Alvarez de Pineda

He was looking for a waterway to the Pacific Ocean. He sailed from Florida along the coast to Mexico. Cortes imprisoned some of his men.

Panfilo de Narvez

He sailed from Florida to northern Mexico. His crew split up in Florida. They were not seen for a year so they were left behind. That group built rafts and some of them landed in Texas near Galveston.

Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca

He landed on an island near Galveston where Indians took care of him. He traded shells and beans for skins and other items. He found some of his crew on the Guadalupe River. Coahuiltecans found them and made them slaves. They became honored guests and shamans(medicine men) after they removed an arrow from one of the indians. He wrote a book and some Spaniards "thought" they say signs of "Seven cities of Cibola"(a city of great wealth.)

Marcos de Niza

He headed out to find Cibola. His slave ran ahead and said he had found it but was killed by indians.

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado

He set out in 1540 with 1000 men. First Europeans to see the southwest and the Grand Canyon. He captured a slave that said he knew where a group of Indians ate off of gold plates. He crossed present day panhandle(Palo Duro Canyon). In 1542 they gave up and killed the slave. He reported back to Spain that there was no gold north of Mexico.

Luis de Moscoso

he left from Florida in 1539 and explored land in southeast U.S. Hernando De Soto died and Moscoso took over.He crossed into Texas where the Caddoes took care of the men. While sailing to Mexico, they discovered petroleum washed on shore.(found no use for it)

Rene Robert cavelier Sieur de La Salle

He wanted to create a trading empire along the Mississippi. He wanted to build a fort at the mouth of the Mississippi. His ship "La Belle" wrecked at Matagorda Bay. Karankawas attacked them. They built Fort St.Louis. There was misery and sickness. They searched for Mississippi River. La Salle's men staged a mutiny(revolt of soldiers/sailors against their leader.) La Salle was murdered and the fort destroyed.

Father Francisco Hidalgo

He sent a message to French asking for help in establishing more missions among the caddos.

Louis Juchereau de St. Denis

He helped Father hidalgo establish 6 missions.

Dr. James Long

He marched into Nacogdoches and declared Texas free from Spain. He attacked La Bahia where Spanish troops surrounded him and jailed him in Mexico. He was shot and killed by a Mexican soldier.

Jane Long

She was the wife of Dr. Long, she had their third child on Bolivar Island. She spent and entire winter alone with her children and a slave. She's known as the "Mother of Texas"

Samuel Kemper

He took over the army after Magee does. He declared Texas independence after crushing the Spanish army.

Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon

He led a movement for freedom from Spain. He drew up plans for a Mexican republic(citizens e;ext representatives to make laws.) He was killed bySpanish forces.

King Ferdinand VII

He accepted the constitution to give the people more power then took it back after he took back his throne.

Moses Austin

He opened 2 goods stores and opened a lead mine. He went to Louisiana, became a Spanish citizen, mined the area. He received a sitio(4428 acres) U.S. both the land; he is also a U.S. citizen. He created the first settlement(Washington County Missouri.) He started a bank and lent money to speculators(someone who buys a large area of land and tries to sell the land bit by bit to others.) The bank lost all of its money when they failed to pay the bank back. Austin was broke. He traveled to San Antonio to try and get permission to settle 300 families in Texas. Mexican governor told him no and to leave Texas.

Baron de Bastrop

He knew the most important Mexican officials and helped Austin get recommended for his land.

Martin De Leon

He founded Victoria, only Mexican empresario to found a colony, 1835 162 families lived there.

Green DeWitt

He was an empresario who founded the town of Gonzales.

James Power and James Heweston

They were Irish immigrants who settled the town of Refugio.

General Don Manuel de Mier y Teran

He explored Texas in 1827, he was a patriot(person who held a deep love for their country), he observed that Texas was mostly full of foreigners.

Captain Juan Davis Bradburn

He arrested people who had made new land grants; intreated people; put William Travis and patrick Jack in jail without charging them with a crime; settlers took up arms against Bradburn; it was resolved when another colonel arrived and released Travis and Jack

General Santa Anna

He was a federalist and over threw the centralist government in Mexico.

General Martin Perfecto de Cos

He was Santa Anna's brother in law,sent to Texas to break up state government, planned to bring in more troops, William Travis captured Anahuac, Travis faces military court trial if caught.

Sam Houston

He was Andrew Jackson's protege(someone who receives support and guidance from another person.) He was an adjutant(a staff officer who assists the commanding officer) general of Tennessee State Military. He spent time with the Cherokees. He was not afraid to make hard choices. He was told the convention of 1836 to focus on creating a government.

Stephen F. Austin

He had a territorial seat in legislature, Judge, studied law. He found land between the Colorado and Brazos Rivers that was ideal for agriculture(preparing the soil, producing the crops, and raising live stock) far away from Comanches. He found land hungry settlers. He offered land at 12 cents per acre. Farmers would receive 177 acres and cattle ranchers would receive a sitio. Settlers had to become Spanish citizens, become roman Catholic, could not be a drunk, gambler, swearer, or idler. HE arrived where Washington-on-the-Brazos is. Settlers brought slaves even though the Mexicans and Austin did not approve. Austin went to Mexico City after Mexico won it's independence; 1 year later he got a better land deal. Colonists formed a militia(a group of armed citizens who serve as soldiers during an emergency) to protect themselves from the Karankawas. Single men formed partnerships(am association of two or people in a business venture.) Jane Long opened a hotel. Daily life was very difficult. Women built fires to cook, had to make their own soap, had few medicines, sew clothes, watch children, no schools. San Felipe was heart of colony; named to honor Mexican governor Felipe de la Garza. Austin kept peace between Mexico and settlers. He was well respected and earned 3 more contracts to bring 900 families to Texas.

William Travis

He was the leader at the Alamo.
