prophets
|
Men who were chosen by God to be His spokesmen to the people. Saint John the Baptist was the last and greatest of God's prophets.

Messiah
|
A Hebrew word that is translated to "Christ" in Greek and means "the anointed one." Thus we give this title to Our Lord Jesus Christ. It was first used by the Jews to refer to the savior promised to Adam and Eve. Waiting for the this person's coming was an important part of Judaism. (some Jews are still waiting for this person to come. They do not believe that Jesus was the Anointed One. The Bible and Tradition assure us that He was.)

|
In ancient times this was someone who announced the arrival of an important person. While the noble visitor was traveling to a town, this person would run ahead of the noble person in order to prepare the people for his visit. The Church gives this title to Saint John the Baptist since it was his duty to prepare the people for Jesus' mission.

|
Someone whose duty it is to announce the coming of an important royal person. The Church gives this title to Saint John the Baptist. He had the mission of announcing the coming of Christ the King.

repent
|
To be very sorry for one's sins and to promise to give up sin in the future. John the Baptist preached this as the way of preparing for the coming of Jesus. Jesus demands that if we do this and believe his good news if we want to reach Heaven.
