salvation history
The events in human history that have been especially connected with the salvation of mankind. It began with the creation of man and reached its greatest point with the life of Christ. The work and preaching of the Catholic Church is a continuation of it. It will be completed at the end of the world.
covenant
In the Old Testament it is the agreement made between God and the people of Israel (Jews). God promised to love and protect His people. In return they agreed to be loyal to him. In the New Testament, the new and everlasting it was made between God and men by Jesus Christ. God promises to free us from our sins and bring us to Heaven. In return, we agree to give up our sins, be baptized, and follow the teachings of Christ and the Church. Every Holy Mass renews this and the words of Consecration tell us that it is a covenant made by the Blood of Christ.
patriarch
A title given to the founding fathers of the Jewish people in the Old Testament. There are four Old Testament ones: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
prefigurement
A person, place or thing that took place before Jesus was born, but which foretold some event in Jesus' life. For example, when God gave bread to His people while they were in the desert during the Exodus, it was one of these to the day when Jesus would give His people the Bread of Life, the Holy Eucharist.
Promised Land
The special land, also known as Palestine or the Holy Land, which God promised to give to his people in the Old Testament.
Israel
The name first given by God to Jacob, the son of Isaac. It later became a name for God's People in the Old Testament. Today, it is the name of the Jewish nation-state in the Mideast. Sometimes, the Catholic Church is called the new this to remind us that Jesus gathered God's People into a New Testament community.
