anointing
The act of pouring oil on someone or something in a religious ceremony. In Christianity it is a sign of being specially chosen by God to share in Jesus' triple office of priest, prophet, and king.
indulgence
The taking away of the punishment our sins deserve. We can do this on earth through prayer, penance, and good works, or we can make up for our sins in purgatory.
oil of the sick
Oil which is blessed by a bishop for use in the sacrament of Anointing. Oil is a symbol of strength and healing.
sign of Anointing
The priest anoints the person with the oil of the sick, ordinarily on the person's forehead and on the palms of his hands while saying: "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up." The message of this sign is that of spiritual healing and salvation.
