Mystery of Faith
This term refers to the Holy Eucharist which is the Sacrifice of Jesus. We still use this title at every Holy Mass. Immediately after the Consecration, the priest says: "Let us proclaim the" this. We then reaffirm our belief in the death and Resurrection of the Lord, which the Mass re-enacts for us.
Real Presence
The term which expresses our belief that Jesus is really and truly present with us in the Holy Eucharist. Christ's real presence may be physical or sacramental. When we pray before the Blessed Sacrament we believe that we are just as much in Christ's presence as His apostles were two thousand years ago.
sacrilege
A serious mistreatment of people, places, or things that have been consecrated to God. A *this* Communion means that someone has received the Blessed Sacrament while being in a state of mortal sin.
sign of the Holy Eucharist
The priest saying the words of consecration over the gifts of bread and wine: "This is my Body... This is the cup of my Blood..." The message is that of sacrifice and of spiritual nourishment.
tabernacle
The special, solid and immovable container, often adorned with symbols of Jesus, in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept. Every Catholic church has one inside it. Thus Jesus remains within the church in a very special way. A vigil light burns night and day before it to remind us that Christ is present.
transubstantiation
The word we use to describe the changing of bread and wine into the very Body and Blood of Christ.
