Gymnosperm
A seed plant that produces seeds that are naked-not enclosed by any protective covering. Although a few are shrubs or vines, most are trees. Four groups: 1) cycads 2) ginkgo 3) gnetophytes 4) conifers.
Cone
The reproductive structure of a gymnosperm.
Pollen
Tiny particles produced by plants that contain the microscopic cells that later become sperm cells.
Ovule
A structure that contains an egg cell. After fertilization occurs, the ovule develops into a seed.
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from a male reproductive structure to a female reproductive structure.
Use of Conifers
Conifers are used to build homes, to make rayon fibers in clothes, to make cellophane wrappers used on some foods, to make turpentine, and to make rosin.
