Right click the Device > Properties

Action Menu

You have updated a driver on a user computer but there doesn't seem to be any change showing on Device Manager? What should you do?

Click Action, Scan For Hardware Changes.

You can also press the F5 key to refresh the screen.

Device Manager Views: This view can be useful when viewing what is connected to a virtual machine, organized according to how the various devices in the computer are connected. You can view the Properties dialog box of these devices by right-clicking (or by double-clicking). You can likely find helpful information here, such as when the device was configured, when the driver was installed and started, and so on.

Devices By Connection

Device Manager Views: Use this option to view resources organized by how they are connected to other types of system resources: Direct Memory Access (DMA), Input/Output (IO), Interrupt Request (IRQ), and Memory. Only experienced system administrators should make changes here because a misstep can render the system inoperable. Consider searching for conflicts found by Device Manager before you do anything here.

Resources By Type

Device Manager Views: This view is useful when you want to view the device hardware resources by DMA, IO, IRQ, and Memory for the purpose of troubleshooting and repairing problems. Consider searching for conflicts found by Device Manager before you do anything here.

You client is working on a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1. They call you extremely frustrated because they have just installed a new device using the 32-bit driver from the manufacturer.

They are not able to get the device working and have tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing it several times. They have also checked for conflicts.

What is likely to be the problem here?

The client is trying to use a 32-bit driver on a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1.

You can’t use a 32-bit driver for a 64-bit resource. You can’t use a 64-bit driver to communicate with a 32-bit resource either.

Your client uses a metered internet connection and is complaining that their device drivers haven't updated automatically.

What is the reason for this?

Updated drivers won’t be downloaded over metered connections. You might see a question

on the exam that asks something based on this scenario

You need to manually uninstall a device driver. What are you going to do?

Open the command promt.

Pnputil.exe -f -d
