(1) "No person may engage in the practice of pharmacy or use the title "pharmacist" or sell, give away, or barter drugs unless the person is licensed as a pharmacist by the board


(2) "the board may issue a license as a pharmacist to any person who files satisfactory proof of qualifications under s. 450.04(3), passes the examination under s.440.05 and pays the fee specified in s.440.05(1)

Exceptions to licensure

Ch 450.03(a, b, d, f, g)


(a)"the offer to sell or sale of contraceptive articles... by a registered nurse" (e.g. Planned Parenthood nurse selling contraceptives)


(b) " the sale of any nonprescription drug product, in an original unbroken package..." (e.g. OTCs)


(d) "The delivery of complimentary samples of drug products or devices to a practitioner by a manufacturer or its agent acting in the usual course of business" (e.g. samples from drug representatives)


(f)"A person who has successfully completed his or her second year in, and is enrolled at, an accredited school of pharmacy and whose practice of pharmacy is limited to performing duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed as a pharmacist by the board" (e.g. pharmacy interns... students)


(g)"A person who has applied for a license... whose practice of pharmacy is limited to performing duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed as a pharmacists by the board and during the period before which the board takes final action on the persons's application

This is for pharmacists who are already licensed in another state and want to transfer their license to a new state

Every 2 years, pharmacists must complete CE hours and apply for a license renewal to continue to legally practice pharmacy

Foreign graduate and postgraduate interns have a maximum of 2,000 pharmacist hours they can log before they are considered to be a pharmacy technician

Practical experience acquired in another state which is comparable to an internship (no hour restriction)

*Student non-academic internship

practice of pharmacy by a person which is not acquired in an academic internship


- must have successfully completed 2nd year of pharmacy school

- be enrolled at a pharmacy school


- limited to performing duties constituting the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision f a supervising pharmacist

Examination protocol

1. you will be notified at least 10 days before the examination


2. bring a photo I.D. to the exam (drivers license or passport)


3. timing: must have completed all the requirements


4. comment on results: within 30 days after test


5. Exam review: must be within 45 days of when the test results were mailed to the pharmacist


6. Exam error

What are the conditions of an exam review?

1. the time for review is limited to 1 hour


2. the exam shall be reviewed only by the applicant in the presence of a proctor


3. the proctor may not respond to inquiries by the applicant regarding allegations of examination error


4. an applicant shall be permitted only one review of the failed examination each time it is taken and failed

What happens if you fail the examinations 2 or more times?

You may be required to complete additional preparation or materials before you take the exam a 3rd time

Supervising pharmacist: a pharmacist who supervises and is responsible for the actions of an intern in the practice of pharmacy



Direct supervision: immediate on premises availability to continually coordinate, direct and inspect at first hand the practice of another

5 criteria usually found in the licensing of a pharmacist

1. Graduation from pharmacy school

Equivalency Exam

Not meeting "active practice of pharmacy" requirement... board decides on an exam for the pharmacist to take before granting reciprocity

-at least 2,000 hours of pharmacy practice over 4 years


- at least 2,000 hours and no less than 500 hours in 3 of 4 12-month periods preceding application for licensure

Licensure Renewal
