Discrete variables
a variable that can only take on certain values
o Exact numbers
Continuous variables
a variable that can take on any value (within the limits that its values may range)
o Weight, age and temp
 Even though a variable is continuous in theory, the process of measurement always reduces it to a discrete one
Nominal scale
o Qualitative variables that are basically categories
 Have to be mutually exclusive (the observations cannot fall into more than one category) and exhaustive (there must be enough categories for all the observations)
• Eye color
Ordinal scale
o Like nominal but like a set of ranks
 Ranked in order of magnitude, but NO IMPLIED DIFFERENCE
Interval scale
Like an ordinal scale but the given distance between measures has the same meaning anywhere on the scale
Ratio scale
Has all the properties of an interval scale plus an absolute zero point
Kelvin
Is a ratio scale because it uses the same unit for its intervals..and has an absolute zero
Order of stats
Research question--statistical question--collection of data--statistical conclusion--research conclusion
