Explain what is meant bythe term ‘standard components’.

Give two ways in which the use of standardcomponents could help a manufacturer save money.

Astandard component is an item that has been standardised upon a range ofapplications such as a hinge or a handle.

Manufactures can save money by usingstandard components because these reduce the amount of stock they hold. It isalso normally cheaper to buy in standard components than to make them yourself.

***The definition is not easy to state without the use of examples such as hingesand handles. It is important that you understand the concept here in order toanswer the question.

***If you take for example a manufacturer of table lamps. The fittings for thebulb and the electric bulb will be standard components that the manufacturerbuys in. The manufacture of plugs is a very competitive market; You can buythem in a supermarket for less than 50p. To tool up and employ people to makeyour own would be very expensive and remember that the quantity that you sellwould only be the same quantity that you as the quantity of lamps that yousell. A lamp manufacturer would not be able to make plugs as cheaply as theycould buy them.

Compare the use of nailsand screws in respect of their holding strength in soft wood.

Nailshold by friction and they can be extracted by pulling with sufficient force.Screws have a greater holding strength because they create a spiral thread thatis enmeshed with the fibres of the wood.

****Questions of this nature are testing your knowledge of commonplace items withindesign and technology, in this case nails and screws. Most people know that anail can be pulled out using a claq hammer or pincers, but a screw can only beremoved mechanically, that is by using a screw driver. You need to be able tothink through why this is the case.

What particular aspect ofmodern furniture manufacture has made knock down fittings popular and costeffective?

Knockdown fittings have enabled the development of flat packed furnitureparticularly for kitchens and bedrooms. Theyare more cost effective because the manufacturer does not have to assemble themor store deliver bulky items.

**The development of knock down fittings and flat pack furniture wassimultaneous, each depending upon the other. For ‘cost effective’ you caneasily read ‘cheaper’ and it is important to see things from the perspective ofthe manufacturing industry. In this instance it is not really the assembly thatwould increase the price the most. It is the cost of storage and distributionfor both the manufacturer and the retailer – consider how many flat wardrobesyou can store in the space of one assembled wardrobe.
