What did the British do in the year 1600?

Queen Elizabeth I granted a charter to the BEIC, giving it a monopoly for all British trade east of Africa.


They failed to establish trade in Indonesia and so the BEIC decided to try their luck in the Mughal empire.

What did the British do in the Mughal empire in the 1600s?

1608: 1st British ship landed in Surat in August of that year. Ask Jehangir for permission to trade.


1612: Shah Jehan, Gujrat governer, granted permission to trade.


1674: moved HQ to Bombay.


1690: founded town of Calcutta.


1691: British paid heavy fines to be allowed to continue trading

Why did the British have to pay heavy fines in 1691?

Aurangzeb suspected the BEIC of issuing their own coins and avoiding taxes. So he sent a formidable army against them and won. The BEIC had to pay a heavy fine to be allowed to continue trading.

What did trade between the BEIC and ME consist of?

British purchases and the export of local cotton, silk and spices

1740 : 10% of all British revenue came from the subcontinent.


1751 : brief war between British and French forces.


1756 : attempt by new nawab of Bengal to expel British from Calcutta.


1757: British conquest of Bengal, Battle of Plassey.


1764 : victory at the Battle of Buxar for the British.


1773: The Regulation Act of 1773 passed.


1784 : The India Act of 1784 ; British government comprisation of India


1786 : Lord Cornwallis appointed 1st governer general.


1799 : Nawabs of Oudh defeated, Tipu Sultan was also defeated & killed.

What happened in 1751?

In 1751 a brief war between the British and French forces took place in Southeast India.


The French were forced to withdraw leaving the field open for the British.

What was Bengal and why was it important?

The province of Bengal during Mughal times consisted of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.


It was the richest province of the empire because of its natural resources and trade.


The Nawabs of Bengal ruled on behalf of the ME but were increasingly independent.

What happened in Bengal?

The new Nawab of Bengal in 1756 attempted to expel the British from Calcutta.


The British then decided to support a rival to the nawab who would be more pliable.


Together with local allies the British were able to defeat the Nawab which led to the conquest of the city.


This is known as the Battle of Plassey and it took place on 23rd June 1757.
