What is a chemical change?
A change in matter that produces a "different" kind of matter. The properties can be very different from the original.
What are examples of a chemical change?
burning wood, bread dough turning into bread, cooking pancakes.
How does the human body help food go through a physical change?
Saliva breaks down food, and more changes occur when the food goes into our stomach.
How does rust form?
Rust forms when oxygen joins with iron.
How does tarnish form?
Tarnish forms when air mixes with copper or silver.
True of false? Burning is a form of chemical change?
True. In fact, exploding is the fastest kind of burning. Rockets use this type of chemical change to propel them into space.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Note, mass is NOT the same as weight. Weight depends on the objects location, mass does not.
How can you find the mass of an object?
By balancing it with objects you know the mass of.
What is the basic unit of measure?
The gram. Large items are measured in kilograms. Very small objects are measured in milligrams.
What is density?
Density is a property of matter. Density is how much mass in a certain volume.
What is an example of density?
If you mix the "same" amount of oil and water, the oil will float. This is because the oil has less density than water.
If two objects have the same mass, but one object is larger than the other, do they have the same density?
No, smaller object has greater density.
What are physical changes?
It is a change that changes the physical properties of matter, but does not produce a different kind of matter.
Give an example of how you can change matter?
By heating or cooling it. This may also cause matter to change state. A solid can become a liquid. A change in the state of matter is a "physical" change.
What is the melting point?
The point at which a solid changes to a liquid. Different types of matter have different melting points.
What is the boiling point?
The temperature at which matter changes from a liquid to a gas. The gasses escape into the air.
What is the melting and boilng point of water?
0 degrees Celsius (32F) for melting. 100 degrees Celsius (212F) for boiling
What happens when you add energy to water?
Adding energy causes the temperature to rise. Engery must be added to water in order to boil it.
What happens when you take energy away from water?
It cools.
What is the freezing point?
The temperature at which matter changes fromo a liquid to a solid. The freezing point of an object is the same as the melting point.
