What is the definition of Alcoholism?
Physiologic tolerance and dependance with symptoms of withdrawal (tremor, tachycardia, HTN, nausea, DT's)
What are some complications of Alcoholism?
Alcoholic cirrhosis, hepatitis, pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy, testicular atrophy
What can happen in the kidneys with alcoholism?
Tubular dysfunction, may be deficient in magnesium and folate
How do you treat Alcoholism?
Disulfiram, AA, supportive care
What is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome?
Thiamine deficiency

Triad of: Confusion, Ophthalmoplegia, Ataxia
What is Wernicke's Encephalopathy?
Irreversible Memory loss, confabulation, personality change
What is Korsakoff's Psychosis?
Periventricular hemorrhage / necrosis of mamillary bodies
How do you treat Wernicke-Korsakoff?
IV Vit. B1

What is Mallory Weiss Syndrome?
Longitudinal lacerations of gastroesophageal junction from excessive vomiting.

Hematemesis, pain
What are Delirium Tremens?
Life threatening alcohol withdrawal symptoms that peak 2-5 days after last drink
Autonomic system hyperactivity (tachycardia, tremors, anxiety, seizures), psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions), confusion
How do you treat Delirium Tremens?
Benzodiazepines
