Warp |
the backing yarn of a woven carpet which runs in its length |
Weft |

Tufting |
is the process of making carpet w/ a pre-woven backing where yarns are stitched into place |
Tuft Bind |
the force it takes to pull a faceyarn from a carpet measured in pounds |
Secondary Backing |
fabric laminated to the back of carpet giving it dimensional stability |
Greige Goods |
partially constructed tufted carpet w/ no secondary backing and no dye |
Dimensional Stability |
the ability of the carpet to maintain its size and shape |
Shrinkage |
decrease in size in the width and/or length of carpet. Shrinkage is not a decrease in its pile height; rather, it takes place i the carpet backing |
Needle punch Carpet |
made of fiber-webs (not yarns), compacted and interlocked, using barbed felting needles. Some Needle puch carpets are flocked and embossed and have diff textural effects, like in courduroy. A coating of weather-resistant latex or similar material is applied to the back. Needle punch carpets are inexpensive and are used for indoor outdoor carpet, artificial grass ssurfaces, and some carpet tiles. |
Fusion-bonded Carpet |
does not have a woven backing. Instead, adhesive is applied to two rubber backings, and singles uarns are implanted into both backings. The adhesive is cured and the pile is produced by splitting two parallel backings down the middle of the pile.. Fusion-bonded carpet is most often cut into modules of 18 in tiles. england still manufactures carpet in this manner, but the US does not |
Modular Square Carpet |
can be any style of manufacturing where the carpet is cut into modules. Often the modules are 18-in squares and have a pressure-sensitive self-releasing backing designed for do-it-your self installations |
Carpet Cushion |
an underlayment material used in stretch-in and double-stick installations. Carpet cushion is sold in a soft, flat mass roll and is made of various materials such as urethane and recycled textiles. |
