Study by Zuroff on McGill retirees, cross sectional: looked at relationship bw ability to accept the past and depression
-example of Zuroff and Darcy being splitters versus Erikson who's a "lumper"

-Ego integrity: too hairy and big to study so doctoral student of Zuroff's who came up with "accepting the past" as a more measurable concept to go after
-aim to study the "despairing adult"
-hypothesis: if you're an old guy and you can't accept the past you're going to be at high risk for depression (not exactly what Erikson said but close enough)

effect on depression was moderated by neuroticism--if you were a retiree who was low on this trait (easygoing) then accepting the past did not predict depression you could say "i regret the past but I'm not depressed" WHEREAS those who were high in neuroticism who couldn't accpe the past were in fact higher in depression
erikson lumper or splitter? zuroff?
erikson lumper zuroff and darcy splitters
