venous blood from unpaired abdominal viscera

GIT

Spleen

Pancreas

Gall bladder

these viscera are supplied by

3 unpaired abdominal arteries

celiac trunk

superior & inferior mesenteric artery

the blood reaches the liver via

the portal vein and then runs through the hepatic veins to the inferior vena cava

this ensures

the nutrients absorbed from the intestine, reach the main metabolic organ by the shortest route

it's formed by 3 veins

1. Splenic vein

2. Inferior mesenteric vein

3. Superior mesenteric vein

1. Splenic vein

runs along the upper margin of the pancreas (same as splenic artery)

inf mesenteric vein joins it behind the body of the pancreas

behind the head of the pancreas it joins with the superior mesenteric vein to form the portal vein

2. Inferior mesenteric vein

contains blood from descending and sigmoid colon & the upper rectum (superior rectal vein)

runs with the inf mesenteric artery

3. Superior mesenteric vein

carries blood from the small intestine, cecum & ascending & transverse colon

accompanied by the superior mesenteric artery

these veins all end in the trunk of the portal vein

right and left gastric veins (from lesser curvature of the stomach)

cystic vein (from gallbladder)

prepyloric vein (from ant surface of pylorus)

porto-caval & cavo-caval anastomoses

vena portae drains blood from unpaired organs of abdomen (intestines, liver, stomach, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder) to liver... passes 2 ciliary beds

porto-caval anastomoses

drainage area of portal vein borders on that of inf & sup vena cava at following sites

sites

esophagus

rectum

abdominal wall

esophagus

blood from the esophageal veins flow through the azygos and hemiazygos veins to the sup vena cava

rectum

blood from the rectal veins to the internal iliac and then inferior vena cava

abdominal wall

connected with the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava

porto-caval anastomoses may also occur between

mesenteric veins & retroperitoneal veins

cavo-caval anastomoses

connections between inferior vena cava and superior vena cava along the posterior wall of the body

3 cavo-caval anastomoses

azygos & hemizygous vein

superior & inferior epigastric veins

superficial epigastric vein

azygos & hemizygous vein

are cavo-caval anastomoses (ascending lumbar veins also connect to these systems)

superior & inferior epigastric veins

-

superficial epigastric vein

drains to the great saphenous vein, and the thoracoepigastric vein (superior vena cava) - these are the subcutaneous anastomoses
