Olduvai Gorge - Which 2 species helped put it on the map? What did Mary Leakey and Louis Leakey do?

Olduvai Gorge is in tanzania and the Zinjanthropus boisei and homo habilis find helped put in on the map. It was mary/louis leakey who found them.

Homo Habilis characteristics

Larger brain face and less projecting face classifies it as homo, but it was able to climb trees.

East Turkana group and sites. Which is associated with the KBS tuff?

The Omo group: Shungara formation, Nakaluchi Formation, the Koobi Fora formation, and it is the Koobi Fora formation that is associated with the KBS tuff.

How old is the KBS tuff?

It is 1.8 mya

What is the classification for Olduvai gorge finds? Why do East Turkana have 2 different classification designation?

Olduvai Gorge is FLK. East Turkana is ER and WT, for both sides of the lake. The R comes from the fact that it was previously called rudolf.

Characteristics of Homo Rudolfensis.

Bell shaped skull a robust hominin but with larger brain size.

What are the three hominini members found around the same time in Lake Turkana site? What are they all associated with?

Homo Habilis, Homo Rudolfensis, and Australopithecus boisei. All are associated with tool use.

Evolution of the genus Homo Erectus, explain 3 points

The first to disperse out of africa, grew bigger brains, and Asian homo erectus have more angular cranium.

What is an industral complex?

It refers to production of tools in a particular time range that have many distinctive features and production methods similar to each other, and which can be seen from numerous assemblages. Or you can say an assemblage of similar industries.

What is the significance of the Shungura formation? Mention the date.

It is where the first stone tools have been found, dated 2.6 mya.

What is the one feature that all Oldowan tool have? Why is this feature not used for other industrial complexes? Name two more Oldowan tools characteristics.

All oldowan tools are basically cores with the flakes broken off. All other industries must be retouched first before being categories, these stone tools were not retouched. Hard hammer percussion and bipolar methods.

What is Dorsal and Ventral?

Dorsal is the outside surface of the core.

Ventral is the inside.

Mary's leakey classification

Manuports, Choppers, Bifaces, Polyhedrons, spheroids, Burin, Awls, and Sundry Tools

Manuports are something that was carried over to the site, but was not manufactured. Choppers are cores that were flaked on one sides, Bifaces, flaked on both sides to make an edge, Polyhedrons, flaked on mutiple sides. Spheroids are circular things, burins and awls look the same. Sundry tools is for any tool that does not fit in the former classification.

Leakey's ratio. It implication for classifiying Alchelian tools.

50% of the tools in assemblages have to be bifaces before it can be considered an achuleian tool.

Differences between Oldowan and Developed Oldowan

Oldowan tools have a higher percentage of choppers. But developed Oldowan shows a decreased importance in choppers, there are more spheroids now.
