Muscular dystrophy
Sarcomeres don't contract properly/muscle fibers break down. Usually result of missing or dysfunctional gene.
Sprain
Damage to ligaments when joints move outside normal range of motion.
Lateral (outer) ankle sprains often involve calconca-fibular or talofibular ligaments which connect to bottom of fibula. |
Shin Splints
AKA Medial tibial stress syndrome.
Fatigue/trauma to muscle tendons attaching to tibia and fibula. Just swelling, or tendons can partially pull away from bone, sometimes bringing parts of bone with them. |
Loose Bodies
Connective tissues, eg. meniscus or cruciate ligament, torn, pieces float about joint cavity, cause severe irritation.
Tenosynovitis
Synovium membrane (sheath around tendons) inflames due to infection or overuse. Can influence the way tendons slide and muscle movement.
Meniscus tear
Meniscus = crescent-shaped cartilage in knee between end of femur and tibia. Usually caused by twisting injury. Problem enhances when loose bodies form.
Achilles tendonitis
Inflammation of achilles tendon connecting Gastrocnemius to Calcaneus. Chronic inflammation causes scar tissue, less flexibility. Affects gait.
Strains
Muscle fibers tear or rupture. Blood may be released, causing internal bruising and swelling. Commonly in groin muscle, adductor longus.
Bursitis
Bursa inflames or bursts.
Achilles Tendon Bursitis: Tendo-calcaned bursa at base of achilles inflames. |
Bursa
Sac-like membrane in joints that cushions between bone and fibrous tissues of muscles and tendons. Fluid filled.
