Describe the normal size, shape and color of a K-9 RBC?

Discocytic, Normocytic and Normochromic.

What are two classifications of anemia and differentiate between the two?

Regenerative and Non-

Regenerative: Regenerative is when the bone marrow is responding to the need for RBC's and will increase production and release immature cells into circulation. Non-regenerative is when the bone marrow isn't producing enough RBC's.

What type of RBC will be seen in a regenerative anemia patient?

Reticulocytes, also known as polychromatophils.

Name the 4 signs of regenerative anemia seen on a slide?

Anisocytosis, polychromasia, NRBC's and Howell Jolly Bodies.

What kind of RBC's are shown in this picture and what do they indicate?

What kind of RBC's are shown in this picture and what do they indicate?

Spherocytes, which indicate AIHA.

What does this slide show and indicate?

What does this slide show and indicate?

Heinz Bodies, which indicate Oxidative Injury.

What cell is seen in this slide and what does it indicate?

What cell is seen in this slide and what does it indicate?

Acanthocyte, seen in splenic or liver disorders.

What cell is seen here and what does it indicate?

What cell is seen here and what does it indicate?

Target cells or codocytes, which indicate liver disease, iron deficiency or regenerative anemia.

What is seen here and what does it indicate?

What is seen here and what does it indicate?

Schistocytes, which indicate DIC, HW disease, Hemangiosarcomas or Vasculitis.

Name this cell and its indication

Keratocyte, indicates Heinz Body Hemolytic Anemia.

Name this cell and its indication?

Name this cell and its indication?

Stomatocytes, can be indicative of AIHA.

What would a cell with Basophilic stippling look like?

RBC with small, dark-blue bodies within the cell.

Define Crenation and what would cause a cell to crenate?

The shrinking of a cell, due to the pH change, from allowing the blood film to dry to slowly.

What is a common finding in feline regenerative anemia?

Howell Jolly Bodies.

If I seen a small amount of different sized RBC's how would I report that?

Anisocytosis+

If you were reading a smear on a patient that was given too much Tylenol that caused Oxidative injury, what would you find?

Heinz Bodies.

If I found approx. 12-14 platelets/OIF, how would I report that?

Increased 12-14/OIF

What kind of stain should be used when doing a reticulocyte count?

New Methylene Blue

If I found cells that varied in size, cells that lacked central pallor and cells that had many colors in a K-9 smear, how would you report that?

Anisocytosis, Spherocytic and Polychromatic.

If you were reading a smear on a patient that had Anemia and you found NRBC's, what type of anemia would this patient have?

Regenerative
