Empirical Formula

The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound

To find the Empirical Formula:

(4 steps)

1. find the mol ratio by dividing the composition data for each element by the Ar of the element

2. Divide each value by the smallest

3. either round all the values or multiply all the values by a suitable factor to get whole numbers

4. write out the empirical formula

Molecular Formula:

The actual number of atoms of each element in one molecule of a compound

Calculating the molecular formula:

Mf = nEf

n = a positive integer

To find the number of units (n) of the Ef in the Mf:

Mr of Mf

------------- = n

Mr of Ef
