What cancers is tumour lysis syndrome associated with? What can precipitate it? Why is it caused?

High grade lymphoma's and leukaemia's




Starting combination therapy can precipitate this




Caused by breakdown of tumour cells, can lead to hyperkalaemia and high phosphate levels

What and when do you give prophylaxis for Tumour lysis syndrome?

Give Allopurinol. Give it prior to chemotherapy.

Pt with lymphoma comes in complaining of having a seizure and has an arrhythmia. They started combination chemo yesterday. What is the diagnosis?

CXR - Hyperinflation, flat hemidiaphragm, bullae

Pt comes in with pain and tenderness of the elbow. The pain is worse on wrist extension or supination...both when the elbow is extended. What is the likely diagnosis?

Lateral Epicondylitis (tennis elbow)

Pt comes in with pain at the elbow. Symptoms are exaggerated on wrist flexion and pronation. Sometimes the 4th and 5th fingers tingle too. What is the diagnosis?

Medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow)




4th/5th finger symptom is due to ulnar nerve involvement.

Pt comes in with a painful red eye. Also says he can't stand looking at bright lights and his vision is blurry. Examination reveals a small, fixed oval pupil with cilliary flush.

Hard and rubbery with possible nipple inversion or skin tethering.
