Virtual memory

part of the hard drive is treated as RAM. It holds part of the program that are not currently in use.

This allows the computer to act as if it has more RAM than than it actually does

Virtual memory is much slower than RAM

Flash memory

Flash memory can hold information when it is turned off but can be edited once it has been written to (like a USB stick)

It is fairly modern and is now being used in lots of situations as an alternative to ROM

Other than Ram and ROM name three types of memory

cache, flash, virtual memory

what does virtual memory do

Part of the hard drive

is treated as RAM

so the computer can pretend to have more RAM than it does

Cache memory

Cache memory is really fast RAM often on the CPU. It is used to hold regularly used instructions so the CPU can quickly load them from cache instead of using slower normal RAM
