Congress of Vienna

The meeting of the major European nations to create a balance of power by redrawing the map of Europe.

The goals of this meeting was to create balance of power, restore old monarchies, and to maintain conservative values.

Metternich

The Austrian ambassador in the congress of Vienna. He was a big influence over Europe's monarchs and supported conservatism to maintain the balance of power.

He was the main person who encouraged maintain conservative values as a means of keeping a balance of power.

Principle of Intervention

This was an agreement during the congress of Vienna that said that if there was a revolution in any country, it was necessary for other countries to come in and put down the revolutions.

This principle was what put down several revolutions during the 1830s and 1840s. This was the major force in maintaining the balance of power.

Concert of Europe

Ten quadruple alliance that consisted of Prussia, Russia, U.K., and Austria that worked together to take down Napoleon and his empire.

This was the start of a restoration of a balance of power between the European nations.

Conservitism

The idea of maintaining old values and avoiding change.


It was also against civil liberties for the people.

Conservatism was a big force in maintain monarchs in power and also was what kept Europe from advancing forward to more liberal ideas.

Edmund Burke

Edmund Burke is credited for being the founder of conservatism. He also had power over Austria.

He is the founder of a concept that supported the return to old values, anti-civil liberties, and stability.

Simon Bolivar

Revolutionary in Latin America.


Supported by the U.S. so that they were independent from Europe.

Bolivar led revolutions in a couple of Latin American nations and also sparked revolutions in other Latin American nations. He was influenced by European ideas.

Greek war for independence

This war was to make the Greeks independent from the Ottoman Empire. This was supported by other major European nations.

This war was an exception to the principle of interference because the Greeks were already an established nation in a sense. This weakened the Ottoman Empire substantially.

This concept supports change, civil liberties, laizze faire, and other enlightenment ideas.

This concept was a major driving force for revolutionaries all across Europe who wanted more rights as a citizen. This concept worked hand in hand with nationalism.

John Stuart Mill

He was the major liberal during his time who supported the absolute liberty of individuals. He was also a supporter of gender equality.

Mill supported absolute freedom which meant no censorship and protection for a tyrannical government.

Nationalism

Nationalism after the French Revolution was a concept that was when people did something for the good of the nation.

The people of the German states felt that it was necessary to create in large Germany. The people of the Italian states felt it was necessary to form one Italy. This is nationalism. This concept was however was supported by revolutionaries and put down by monarchies.

Early Socialism

This concept was meant to introduced equality in social conditions and believed that human cooperation was what would maintain a successful society.

Socialist were prominent in this time and arose because of the bad working conditions. This was mostly supported by the working class as a means of getting better conditions.

July Revolution

The July revolution was a revolution against King Charles X of France for his very conservative ideas. The people go Paris hd a revolution which resulted in the new king, Louis Phillipe.

This was the end to the Bourbon line of kings and also brought up a new more liberal ruler.

Decembrists

The Decembrists were of people who rebelled against Nicholas being the next Czar in Russia. The Decembrist Revolt was quickly put down by Nicholas and gave him the reputation of the policeman of Europe.

He was a major force in maintaining the balance of power in Europe and also was majorly conservative.

Revolutions of 1848

There were revolution all across Europe in the year 1848 (France, German states, Italian states, Hungarian Austria). Most of these revolutions were motivated by nationalism and liberalism. Although they were put down, it still left a liberal impact on these nations.

This was a step closer towards more liberal ideas. Although the rebellions were put down, Prussia and Piedmont keep a constitution, and Austria loses serfdom.

Giuseppe Mazzini

The nationalist who led the revolutions in the Italian states to form one Italy. This revolution was put down my Austria.

This was an example of the nationalistic revolutions in Europe. Although they were put down, nationalism was still alive.

New police and bobbies

The police forces were reactions to the revolutions of 1848. They were meant to maintain stability and order in society.

This was a very long lasting effect from the 1848 revolutions which was became integrated into everyday European culture.

Romanticism

This was a intellectual movement that emphasized emotion and individual feeling rather than logic and reason.

This movement was a rejection to the urbanization that came along with the industrial revolution. It rejected the city life for nature.

Ludwig Von Beethoven

A musical composer who embodies romanticism in music. He created very famous pieces that convey great emotion.

He was a major influence for other musical composers and was one of the first to convey emotion so vividly through music.
