Mao AND Deng - both guys were COMMUNISTS.
Not one or the other.
Led the Red Army on the Long March as they escaped from the Nationalist Chinese troops.
MAO ZEDONG. He became popular for ordering his men to be kind to the peasants - the basis of communist revolution.
Nationalist General and Leader Jiang Jieshi(Chiang Kaishek)hated this guy.

Well, he DID drive him off mainland China and into Taiwan.
Became the leader of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Worked with the Soviet Union (USSR) for China's First FIVE YEAR PLAN.

Emphasized heavy industry and industrialization.
Led the Great Leap Forward (second Five Year Plan) to its disastrous conclusion.

(1) forced peasants to give up land, livestock and equipment to form communes; (2) heavy industry - backyard steel furnaces - took peasants away from growing food and caused millions to die of starvation.
Briefly got into power after the failure of the Great Leap Forward in the early 1960s; allowed peasants to keep a profit, have a private plot, and for some to start small businesses.

Was purged and jailed during the Great Cultural Revolution.
