Sulcus Terminalis
-divides tongue into anterior 2/3 and posterior 1/3
-circumvallate papillae restricted to this area
Filiform Papillae
-most numerous, smallest papillae
-on entire anterior dorsal surface of tongue
-conical, stratified squamous
-no taste buds
-mechanical function
Fungiform Papillae
-mushroom shaped
-entire dorsal surface of tongue
-more at tip
-taste buds in epithelium, dorsal aspect of papillae
Circumvallate Papillae
-large, dome-shaped
-only anterior to sulcus terminales
-each papilla: moat-like space with stratified squamous epithelium
-lateral surface epithelium has taste buds
-Von Ebner's glands: ducts of lingual salivary glands- deposit serous secretion into moat for cleaning
-
Alimetary Canal Layers
-Mucosa
-Submucosa
-Muscularis
-Serosa (adventitia)
3 layers of Mucosa
-epithelium
-lamina propria
-muscularis mucosae
Mucosa- epithelium
1. Facilitates passages of bolus
2. Provides selectively permeable barrier between body/external en
3. absorbs digestion produces- transports to vascular sys
Mucosa- Lamina Propria
-loose connective tissue
-fenestrated capillaries for absorption
-contains glands
-contains immune sys components
-absorption in small/large intestine
-many lymph capillaries- receive lipids and proteins
Mucosa- Muscularis Mucosae
-boundary between mucosa and submucosa
-deepest portion of mucosa
-two layers: inner circular and outer longitudinal (can produce mucosa movement independent of entire gut wall)
Submucosa
-dense irregular connective tissue
-larger blood vessels- send branches to mucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa
-lympathics
-esophagus and initial part of duodenum have submucosal glands
-nerve plexuses = submucosal plexus (Meissner's); innervate smooth muscle
Muscularis Externa
-aka Muscularis
-two cocentric thick layers of smooth muscle
-inner layer = circular layer- tight spiral
-outer loose spiral = longitudinal layer
-Myenteric plexus (Auerbach's)- part of enteric division of ANS; postganglionic parasympathetic neurons
